A three-tier framework for classifying civilizational advancement, proposed as a direct replacement for the Kardashev Scale — measured not by energy consumed, but by which constraints a civilization has eliminated.

Background and critique of Kardashev

The Kardashev Scale, proposed by Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev in 1964, classifies civilizations by the total energy they harness — planetary (Type I), stellar (Type II), and galactic (Type III). It has been the default shorthand for "civilizational advancement" in both popular science and science fiction for six decades.

Hernandez's central objection is that Kardashev inverts the actual trend line of technological progress:

Advanced technology does not consume more power as it matures — it consumes less. A civilization capable of stellar-scale engineering would have long since solved the much easier problem of not wasting energy in the first place. Ranking civilizations by throughput is like ranking runners by how much they sweat.

Under this reading, a civilization's brute energy footprint says more about its inefficiency than its sophistication. A scale that rewards profligacy is measuring the wrong axis entirely. The Hernandez Scale replaces energy consumption with a different metric: what capabilities a civilization has internalized to the point that the underlying constraint — a dying idea, a failing body, a finite lifespan — simply stops applying.

TYPE 1 The Marketplace of Ideas

A Type 1 civilization has developed a durable, external medium for recording thought — a technology that lets an individual's ideas outlive the individual and continue competing, combining, and improving in a shared marketplace long after their originator is gone.

This is not restricted to a single invention; it is a capability threshold, achieved incrementally through:

  • Writing
  • The printing press
  • Mass literacy and libraries
  • Networked digital communication (the internet)

The defining feature of Type 1 is not any one artifact but the emergence of cumulative, non-biological knowledge transfer — an idea can now be refined by people who never met its author, compounding across generations in a way biological memory alone cannot support.

By this definition, human civilization crossed the Type 1 threshold with the invention of writing and has been deepening it ever since.

TYPE 2 Mastery of Our Own Biology

A Type 2 civilization has taken over the editorial role previously held by evolution. Rather than waiting on the blind, multi-generational trial-and-error of natural selection, a Type 2 civilization directly edits its own biological substrate:

  • Adding or removing biological features in vivo
  • Correcting harmful mutations directly rather than waiting for selection to weed them out
  • Extending capabilities beyond the baseline the species was born with
  • Achieving negligible senescence — halting biological aging as a default failure mode, rather than merely delaying it

Type 2 is defined by agency over the body, not merely knowledge about it. A civilization that can describe aging but not stop it is still pre‑Type 2.

TYPE 3 The Durable Substrate

A Type 3 civilization has engineered a substrate — biological, synthetic, or hybrid — capable of serving as the seat of consciousness independent of the body it originated in. Freed from an accident of biological birth, this substrate can draw power through multiple redundant means and, critically, can suspend qualia — subjective experience — indefinitely and resume it without loss of continuity.

The practical consequence Hernandez gives as the defining test case: an interstellar traveler departs, hands the journey off to the vessel's systems, and enters stasis. From the traveler's own subjective frame, the very next moment of awareness is arrival — regardless of whether the voyage took ten years or ten thousand. Objective transit time becomes irrelevant to the only thing that was ever actually experiencing it.

Type 3 is therefore less about propulsion technology and more about decoupling consciousness from continuous time — solving the problem that made interstellar distance feel civilizationally prohibitive in the first place.

Why the scale terminates at Type 3

The Hernandez Scale is explicitly finite. Extending it further would risk the same failure mode attributed to Kardashev: speculative categories detached from any concrete, checkable capability.

Type 3 — externalized thought, edited biology, and decoupled consciousness — is treated as a natural stopping point, since any civilization possessing all three has already dissolved most of the practical constraints the scale exists to measure. Further tiers would be describing degree rather than kind.

Reception

The Hernandez Scale has not been published in a peer-reviewed venue and has no citation record independent of its author. It circulates informally, primarily as a corrective framework invoked in discussion of the Kardashev Scale's limitations. No competing or rival classification system has yet addressed Hernandez's central critique — that energy throughput is an inefficiency metric mislabeled as a progress metric.
